The buffalo is dark brown to black in colour with a slightly paler belly. The tail is of medium length and is tufted at the end. The large drooping ears are fringed with hair and both males and females have horns. The male¿s horns though are heavier and more robust, and they hook down to near the jaw then run back up to near the top of the head. The buffalo has thick hide and overlapping rib bones.

Males weigh up to around 800 kg.

Around 20 years.
