Species name Syncerus caffer
Family Bovidae
Order Artiodactyla
Habitat
Buffalos are adaptable animals and can occupy habitats from open grasslands to wooded savanna and thickets.
Interesting Facts
The buffalo┐s rib cage is usually described as overlapping. Heavy bone tapers down to heavy gristle where the next rib begins and therefore no soft tissue spaces between the ribs occur. This makes it difficult for poachers to wound the buffalo in the chest area. When the buffalo is wounded but not dead it is very dangerous and can be very aggressive. Poachers must be careful when approaching a wounded buffalo.
Related Species
There are two sorts of buffalo - the Asiatic or water buffalo and the African buffalo. The African buffalo is not a water buffalo although it does like the water. Real water buffalo are found in India. The American bison is sometimes confused with the buffalo but the two are very different.
