Distribution

Africa has over 80 species of antelope. The impala is found in Southern Africa, and is larger in the eastern areas.

Habitat

Areas of short grass with medium or dense stands of bush are ideal for the impala. A permanent water supply is also an important requirement in their habitat. They can be found in savanna regions, grasslands with scattered trees and open woodlands, avoiding areas of tall grass at all costs.

Numbers

The impala is common and dominant in its own habitat.

Related Species

There are about 74 more or less closely related antelopes, mostly to be found in Africa. An exception is the Indian antelope or blackbuck.
