Species Name Tragelaphus strepsiceros
Family Bovidae
Order Artiodactyla
Distribution
The kudu can be found in Southern and Eastern Africa.
Habitat
The kudu lives in grasslands, bush and various types of woodland. They are shy animals and their main demand with regard to habitat is cover in which to hide; they therefore avoid open grass plains.
Numbers
In some areas the numbers are being maintained. In others, where their habitat is being seized by humans, the kudu numbers are declining. Kudus are killed for food and sport, and their horns are a prized trophy. Kudus are also the natural prey of lions, leopards, cheetahs, wild dogs and the hyenas.
Related Species
There are many other species of antelopes living in Africa, including the lesser kudu (Tragelaphus imberbis), which is a smaller and shyer version living in dryer country.
